Ramsey Girls Wrestling has dominated the mat all season long, but in this past month the team delivered several standout performances.
In January, the team competed in the Queen of the Hill Duals where they battled their way to 7th in the state. In February, the girls left their all on the mat at the county tournament resulting in two champs and 9 total placers, which led the team to a third consecutive county title. Lastly, just last week the team reached the state semifinals after a close playoffs match.
The county tournament included major successes across the board. Lizzie Panuccio and Francesca Muia took 1st, Paige Berger took 2nd, Reese Rotonde and Vanessa Colon took 3rd, Isabella Santonocito and Jayden Soliman took 4th, Emma Cabrera took 5th, and Meghan Castro took 6th. Each girls’ individual results contributed crucial points towards Ramsey’s overall team victory.
Last week the girls wrapped up the team season with matches against Jefferson/Sparta and Morris Hills. First they faced Jefferson/Sparta in the playoffs, a team they had beat earlier in the season 48-21. However, this match was much closer, coming down to the very last bout. Ramsey pulled through with a pin in the final match to make the score 39-33 to advance to the semifinals. Second, they were up against Morris Hills who they had beat 36-35 earlier in the season at the Queen of the Hill Duals. Unfortunately, the Rams suffered a 46-24 loss in the semi final round, but despite their loss Ramsey’s postseason run highlighted the team’s grit and competitiveness.
Team matches may be over for this season, but Districts is approaching fast and the girls are looking to secure a District team title. The team has one more week to prepare before they travel to High Point for the tournament in which only the top four will advance to Regions.
