Is Impeachment Really The Answer?

Impeachment proceedings targeted towards the President of the United States is a significant event. It is not something that can be taken lightly, and its effects are unpredictable. The Democrats may think that impeaching President Trump will help their party in the long run, but I fear impeachment proceedings may actually do the opposite.

While President Trump has acted very suspiciously, warranting the need for an inquiry, the current Ukrainian scandal is not the first time he has acted this way. Up until now, he has been able to survive all past controversies. What happens if he survives this one too?

President Trump is known for his controversial nature. His having no experience in politics prior to assuming the Presidency is no surprise to anyone that sees how he acts in the public eye. What is unfortunate is that after everything that has come to light in the past, he still seems to move on untouched.

After everything he’s done, from the investigation into Russia to the Stormy Daniels controversy, he has walked away clean. It would not surprise me if he could somehow buy his way out of this impeachment inquiry and eventually attack the media to a point where the whole event is forgotten. This dangerous combination is a set of skills this president has seemed to have perfected during his time in office; if his presidency survives this investigation, the results could really backfire for the Democrats.

Take the 2016 election for example. Throughout his campaign, then candidate Donald Trump was proven to have done multiple things that should have honestly destroyed his chance of being elected. Personally, I think the Access Hollywood tape from 2005 should have gotten him eliminated from the race altogether. But in the end, Trump was able to assert his power by completely deflecting the issue, blaming Bill Clinton for saying worse and ultimately swaying a large portion of the public back in his favor.

This strategy is what ultimately won him the 2016 election. What I fear most about this impeachment process is that if Trump is able to come back from it, it may be the very thing that wins him the 2020 election.

To me, impeaching the President is honestly justified in this scenario. I am simply questioning whether the Democrats are truly thinking this through enough. They will need to have an extremely large amount of unquestionable and incriminating evidence against the President if they hope to win. This is a man that has survived far worse. Hopefully, this does not do the opposite of what it is intended to do by ultimately securing his spot as President for four more years.
