It has recently confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child in the spring of 2019. Kensington Palace announced the happy news on Monday, October 15th, 2018. The couple has flourished in a wave of popularity following their marriage at Windsor Castle on May 19th, 2018. The ceremony was watched by millions of people around the globe and it’s clear that this pregnancy will also be followed very closely as a media frenzy has already erupted.

Part of the reason that the couple is so prominent is the fact that Meghan Markle brought aspects to the royal family that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. Meghan is a retired biracial American actress. She was born in Los Angeles, California on August 4th, 1981. Her mother, who is African American, is a social worker and yoga instructor. Her father, who is Caucasian, is a retired television director of photography and lighting director. His profession resulted in his young daughter often visiting his sets. They got divorced when she was six years old and she is currently estranged from her two older paternal half siblings. She was educated at private schools and later attended Northeastern University where she graduated in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree and a double major in theater and international studies. She began playing small roles in American TV shows including General Hospital, Century City(2004), and CSI:NY(2006) though her best-known role was as Rachel Zane, on the legal drama series Suits. She also is an outspoken feminist and has often addressed issues of gender inequality. Her lifestyle website The Tig even featured a column profiling influential women.

From 2011 Meghan Markle until 2013 Meghan was married to actor and producer Trevor Engelson. They separated in a no fault divorce in August 2013 citing irreconcilable differences. She met Prince Harry on a blind date in 2016 and in 2017 they announced their engagement and she moved to London where they got married the next year. Their marriage has been portrayed as giving the royals a more accessible, modern and inclusive image. With the news about the child it is clear that barriers will continue to broken as the child will be the first prince of princess of color. Although the child is seventh in line to the throne it may not actually be given the title of prince or princess but of earl or lady depending on its sex. A 1917 decree by King George V declared that the great-grandchildren of the sovereign would not be called princes or princesses, with the exception of the eldest male descendant in the direct male line. In this case that is Prince William’s first child, Prince George.

That rule was revised in 2012 by Queen Elizabeth to give that title to all of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, so George’s siblings are Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Unless the Queen makes a similar change on behalf of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle their child will be an earl or lady. Questions have also arisen with the outbreak of this new such as if the royal baby will be an American citizen like it’s mother or a British citizens like it’s father? The Duke and Duchess are currently touring Australia and are expected to take part in over 76 public events during their trip. This news could translate into even larger crowds than they had been expected to draw.
